PART 1: What Florida Sun Really Does to Your Car’s Paint — And How to Protect It If you live in Florida, you already know what the sun can do to people. Leave the house without sunscreen on the wrong July afternoon and you may regret it before dinner. Your car doesn't have the option of going indoors.
Day after day, it sits in some of the most intense sunlight and heat in the country. And while today's automotive finishes are remarkably sophisticated, they aren't indestructible. Over time, Florida's combination of ultraviolet radiation, high temperatures, humidity and year-round exposure can take a very real toll on paint, clear coat, plastic trim, headlights and interiors.
The frustrating part is that much of this damage happens gradually. You probably won't walk outside one morning and discover that your beautiful red car has suddenly turned pink. Instead, the deterioration occurs a little at a time.
Until one day you look at your car and realize it simply doesn't look the way it used to. Florida Is a Tough Place to Be a Car Florida sunshine is one of the reasons millions of us live here. But the ultraviolet radiation contained in sunlight is also one of your vehicle's persistent environmental enemies.
Modern automotive paint typically consists of several layers. Beneath the color is primer and other protective material; Over the color coat is a transparent clear coat designed to provide gloss and protect the finish underneath. That clear coat is your vehicle's first line of defense.
But years of exposure to sunlight, heat, contaminants and improper maintenance can gradually degrade it. As the surface deteriorates, a vehicle can lose some of its original gloss and depth. Eventually, badly neglected finishes may develop oxidation, discoloration or clear-coat failure.
You've undoubtedly seen older Florida cars that demonstrate the extreme result: faded hoods, dull roofs and trunk lids with peeling or cloudy clear coat. That didn't happen overnight. It was the cumulative result of thousands of days outdoors.
Why UV Radiation Matters Ultraviolet radiation carries enough energy to contribute to the chemical breakdown of materials exposed to it over long periods. Automotive manufacturers formulate modern paint systems to resist UV damage, but resistance isn't immunity. Think about patio furniture, outdoor signs, house paint or almost anything else left permanently in the Florida sun.

On a sunny Florida afternoon, exterior surfaces can become dramatically hotter than the surrounding air. Dark-colored vehicles can absorb especially large amounts of solar energy. That repeated cycle of heating during the day and cooling overnight puts additional stress on materials throughout the vehicle.
And Florida doesn't give cars much of a winter vacation. In northern states, UV exposure decreases substantially during winter and many vehicles spend months under overcast skies or in garages. Here, strong sunshine is a year-round fact of life.
It Isn't Just the Paint When we talk about sun damage, paint gets most of the attention. But look around an older Florida vehicle and you'll often find deterioration elsewhere. Black plastic exterior trim may become gray or chalky.
Rubber seals can deteriorate. Headlight lenses may become cloudy or yellowed. Inside the vehicle, dashboards, leather, vinyl and plastic surfaces face their own battle with UV exposure and extreme cabin temperatures.
Window tint can help reduce some of that interior exposure, while appropriate protectants and regular maintenance can extend the life and appearance of interior materials. But Florida sun protection should involve the entire vehicle, not just the paint. Isn't Wax Enough?
For generations, waxing the car was the standard answer to paint protection. And a good automotive wax can improve gloss and provide a sacrificial layer between the finish and the environment. The problem is durability.
Wax gradually wears away and needs to be reapplied. Synthetic paint sealants generally offer greater durability than traditional waxes, but they too require periodic renewal. That's why ceramic coatings have become increasingly popular.
A professionally applied ceramic coating creates a durable protective layer over a vehicle's clear coat. What Does a Ceramic Coating Do? Among its advantages are improved resistance to environmental contamination, easier cleaning, hydrophobic—or water-repelling—properties and the deep gloss that makes ceramic-coated vehicles so visually striking.
A quality coating can also provide another level of protection against the environmental and UV exposure Florida vehicles encounter every day. But there is something consumers should understand: Ceramic coating is not armor. It doesn't make paint scratch-proof.
It won't stop a rock traveling at highway speed from chipping your hood. And it won't eliminate the need to wash and maintain your vehicle. Those are important distinctions because ceramic coatings are sometimes promoted with claims that make them sound almost magical.
They aren't magic -- they are a very effective form of automotive surface protection when properly applied and maintained. What About Paint Protection Film? Paint Protection Film—usually called PPF—solves a somewhat different problem.
PPF is a transparent urethane film installed over vulnerable painted surfaces. It creates a physical barrier between the paint and things trying to damage it. That makes PPF particularly valuable on areas such as the front bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors, where stone chips and road debris are common.
Modern premium films can be remarkably difficult to see once professionally installed, and many have self-healing characteristics that allow minor surface marks in the film to disappear with heat. So which is better—ceramic coating or PPF? That's really the wrong question, because they do different jobs.
Ceramic coating primarily provides surface and environmental protection. PPF provides physical impact protection. For owners who want a particularly high level of protection, the two can be used together.
We'll explore both technologies in much greater detail later in this Guide. The Most Important Protection Costs Nothing There is another extremely effective way to reduce sun damage: Keep the vehicle out of the sun whenever reasonably possible. A garage is ideal; a carport helps.
Choosing a shaded parking spot can reduce exposure, although parking beneath certain trees introduces another Florida problem—sap, pollen, bird droppings and other contaminants. The important thing is to recognize that UV damage is cumulative. Reducing exposure whenever practical helps.
Regular washing is important. Florida doesn't expose vehicles to sunlight alone. Our cars collect insect remains, bird droppings, pollen, road grime, hard-water deposits and countless other contaminants.
Then, the Florida sun bakes those substances onto a hot finish. That's why contaminants—particularly bird droppings and insect remains—shouldn't be allowed to sit on the paint indefinitely. New Cars Need Protection, Too One of the biggest misconceptions about vehicle protection is that it becomes necessary when a car starts showing its age.
Actually, that's backwards. The ideal time to think about protecting paint is when the paint is still in excellent condition. Consider what vehicles cost today.
A new pickup can easily represent a $50,000, $60,000 or even larger investment. Luxury SUVs and performance vehicles can cost considerably more. Even mainstream family cars represent substantial purchases.
Many owners protect their phones with cases the day they buy them, while leaving a vehicle worth tens of thousands of dollars exposed to Florida's environment. Protection can't prevent normal aging altogether. But preserving the finish can help a vehicle continue looking newer longer—and appearance can matter when it event …
