By COREY EBERHARDT President CoaterZ When did the pickup truck stop being just a workhorse, and start being more of a show horse? I don’t know the answer to that for sure. But I can recall days when pickup trucks were looked at as more utilitarian vehicles, relied upon by working people to lug our work-related tools and supplies around.

We still use them for that. But today, many of us like them to look good while they do all that heavy lifting. They may carry signage that advertise our businesses.

And if so, we want them to look sharp while they do it. And there’s more to it that just that. Many of us have come to prefer pickups for day-to-day transportation duties that have little or nothing to do with work.

And we love them for recreation, too – on the weekends, they haul around our boats, dirt bikes, and trailers, too. At CoaterZ, pickups make up a large percentage of our ceramic coating and Paint Protection Film business. I can say the same about our sound system and accessories businesses, too.

Scratched and scuffed And that brings me around to bed liners. If you truly love your pickup truck, the last thing you want to see is a scratched and scuffed pickup bed. It’s not uncommon to see a good-looking and well-cared-for pickup with an ugly, gouged-up bed.

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, aftermarket manufacturers began offering molded plastic liners that simply dropped into a pickup’s bed. They did a pretty good job of protecting the pickup beds from scratches and dents, and they got to be fairly popular. Rust and corrosion But it didn’t take long for pickup owners to discover the weaknesses and limitations of drop-in bed inserts.

Dirt, sand, moisture, leaves and other harmful stuff could get trapped between the liner and the metal bed, and that could cause rust and corrosion. Also, cargo could slide around on the insert’s plastic surface. If a liner didn’t fit in the bed snugly, it could move around a bit, and that movement could result in scuffing of the bed’s paint.
